A Gurdwara in Leicester rejected an interfaith wedding to take place in their holy temple.

The committees and worshipers of Guru Nanak Gurdwara had said the Sikh religion is not permissible in allowing a Sikh and non-believer to unite as one, in the religious ceremony.

In mid December 2014 a Sikh woman and her Hindu fiancé had visited the Guru Nanak Gurdwara to pre book their wedding ceremony for November 2015.

The Sikh woman had said, "the worshippers had rejected to perform our wedding ceremony since my fiancé is Hindu, they stated the Anand Karaj does not allow a non-Sikh who doesn’t believe in the Sikh faith to get married in the Gurdwara".

The bride-to-be shared how the Gurdwara had previously performed an interfaith marriage 3 years ago, as her cousin had got married in the same temple.

"I don’t know if it is because interfaith marriages have started to become more common, and that is why they have rejected mine".

Sikhism teaches followers that any human of any religion is welcome to the Gurdwara, as all are equal.

The Sikh woman’s fiancé had questioned the belief as he said, "I have always respected the Sikh religion for welcoming all religions to their temple, but if everyone is equal in this Sikh holy place then why am I differentiated and treated differently when I want to marry her?"

A committee member, Singh of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara had said, "we did allow non-Sikh’s to get married a few years ago. However, over the growing years it has increased, and we have gotten a lot of strong views from other Sikh followers; as they know the scriptures say a Sikh marriage should be between two Sikh people.

"You can’t have a traditional Sikh wedding if the other partner does not believe in the faith. How will he or she even understand what is being said during the marriage ceremony? If they don’t understand then there is no point and that is why it has been rejected for many couples", Singh said.

The Sikh-Hindu couple have found a Gurdwara who are willing to perform the Sikh Marriage in November 2015. The Gurdwara who accepted the interfaith marriage were not comfortable talking about their reasons for acceptances due to public disputes.
