An interfaith marriage is a commitment to learn the marriage ceremony or ceremonies. During the planning stages of your wedding there’s no doubt that you’d need a bit of background.

Below are religious ceremonies you will need to know for your interfaith marriage.

Islam

Nikah:

Nikah is the marriage of the bride and groom; it is a mutual agreement between the two. As they agree they enter a marriage contract, as they can both outline terms and conditions to be part of the contract.

Mahr:

The Mahr is a responsibility of the groom to provide financial support for his wife, for the future.

Sikhism

Anand Karaj:

The Sikh marriage is held in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib. A wedding hymn is sung, which explains the relationship between God and the individual. The couple walk clockwise around the Guru Granth Sahib four times, which is the joining of two souls together in one.

Hinduism

Vivaah Samskar:

The priest lights a fire and recites sacred languages of scriptures. The bride and groom are joined together with a knot of fabric. The bride puts her foot on a stone to show her willingness to commit her duties as a wife. The couple walk around the fire seven times.

Christianity

Vows:

The couple getting married to each make traditional vows, as such:

I, take you,to be my wife [or husband].to have and to holdfrom this day forward;for better, for worse,for richer, for poorer,in sickness and in health,to love and to cherish,till death us do part,according to God’s holy law;

Judaism

Kiddushin (marriage):

A Jewish marriage is conducted under a canopy that represents a home that the couple will share. The groom signs a contract that consists of his promises to his wife. The Jewish ceremony is very short.
